We’re continuing to move along with school despite some of the distractions the foster kids bring to the home. Hannah just finished her 12th week of P4/5. We had a week off when the kids were in Texas and we’ll probably have some time off this upcoming week as my parents are coming for a visit.
Base P4/5:
Continuing with the daily readings and Mother Goose rhymes with a theme of “around the world”.
We started an art appreciation book and also a sticker book which is just meant to introduce lots of new vocabulary.
Hannah really enjoys the current ‘science’ book by the Berenstain Bears. I’m always surprised by the amount of detail that they get on each page and its one of my favorites to read. The first section was about the months and seasons of the year. The second was about animals, plants, and earth science and the third section is about machines, energy, and experiments. I’m sure we’ll read through this one again. 🙂
I also am a big fan on the socials studies book we’ve been using. I’m always pleasantly surprised with the Usborne books. Its very detailed regarding different occupations and has fun play on word names for the people in the stories.
LAK:
We definitely don’t stay on track with this program (which is OK since its a Kinder program). We’re on week 28. Working on the letter “G”. She has 8 more ‘weeks’ of this program, but I want to go back and do some of the extra activities that are suggested as well as the reading materials.
Last week I had a breakthrough with the early readers that come with this program. Hannah always resisted them to the point of throwing a fit even though I knew she knew the letter sounds. So I had shelved them back on week 12ish. But she recently really got into coloring her worksheets when she was done with them, and this particular set of books is black and white. So I offered to let her color them if she would read them to me first. Success! She’s read 4 of them so far. We might just catch up before week 36.
Math:
Hannah is still working through the Kumon book and Ben is doing a Kumon folding book. She is doing early addition and sometimes will randomly call out a math problem.
PE:
The girls of the family are taking a karate class through the Gilbert rec program and Ben is going to do his first class by himself, another movement class. He didn’t even cry about being left alone. In fact, Kathy said he was getting on all the elements before the teacher even got them all set up. 🙂
Art:
Kathy, as always, does a great job finding crafts for the kids to do and I’m thankful for her. 🙂 She’s been making extras for the girls so they don’t feel left out. I think these flowers are pretty cute.
