The Old Has Gone the New Has Come

This ^ . . . was my baby before I had kids. We got it for me at least 7 years ago. It still ranks up there as one of my most important possessions. Its been on multiple road trips/vacations, it carried me through two pregnancies (both of which I went past 40 weeks), its been to the hospital and in lots of waiting rooms, on planes, to multiple states. I have tons of games. I have logged SO many hours of leveling up my characters, adventuring as Zelda, finding all the coins in Mario, collecting all the pokemon etc. I have always been impressed with how well it held up under my wear. The battery still holds a full charge, the screens are still in good shape. The mic had stopped working somewhere back there and my left and right triggers were starting to get finicky.
We started letting the kids use it when they got old enough. Maybe about a year ago. I bought a couple more kid friendly games that they could play and it turns out that Benjamin is really good at Mario. We’ve been even more impressed with how well it has held up through the foster kids and our kids. It was used a lot. At some point, we lost all the stylii that I had for it and then we found them again and then we (the kids) got a stylus stuck in the stylus holder. When I started coaching volleyball, I knew that I could take the kids and if I brought the DS, they would be good for at least an hour sharing turns playing.

Last week, my beautiful children decided to see if it would withstand being pulled apart. . . not so much. 🙁 What to do? . . . I contemplated not buying a new toy, but Nate quickly pointed out that I wouldn’t be too happy about that. I’ve been wanting a Wii, but we want to wait for the next one to come out (Wii U?) first and then I would have the problem of all the games I have that would no longer be playable. So then I thought, well, maybe I should get a 3DS because it will still play my other games and then I can start buying the new games. Unfortunately, ts still running a little high for my budget new and on Ebay and then I would want to start buying new games right away and that isn’t in the budget either (drat being a homemaker and not making the fun money anymore). So, we got a used one off Ebay that also came with a version of Pokemon that I didn’t have yet . . .
Its the same model as the one we had, but its so much prettier according to Hannah since it is blue and not white. I think when we bought, there were only two colors. The kids are behaving during volleyball again, and I’m happy meeting some new Pokemon!

The kids are going to pay for the new one out of their allowance. Unfortunately, Benjamin doesn’t get one yet, he will start when he turns 3 in November. So I’m contemplating waiting until then to check his dollars off. They each owe me $25, I picked up the shipping cost. 🙂

  1. I think it’s really great how you guys get the kids to pay off their debts and take responsibility (like with the library books as well). What an awesome way to foster a respect for money early!
