We unexpectedly received a gift of Snap Circuits Jr from a Sonlight mom who had found our blog when we were linked at Sonlight. This particular set was on our “extra homeschooling things” wishlist and had been for awhile since it wasn’t really a ‘necessary’ purchase. Nate had something similar when he was younger so he was pretty excited about it and I had seen good reviews of it.
We just happened to have a wireless router go bad on us last week, so Nate took the opportunity to show the kids what a real circuit board looks like before we opened the kit to play. The box says ages 8-108, but Hannah didn’t need a lot of help. She already knows how to read a grid so just following the directions (like making a Lego project) and putting the pieces in place came fairly naturally to her. There were a couple times Nate had to help her go in the correct order. The pieces are large and ‘small finger friendly’. There are wires, microphones, music circuits, motors, lights, fans, switches. I also like that they all pack nicely into the box. I am impressed with it overall.
In her first sitting, she went through the first 5 suggested projects. Making a closed circuit, turning on a light, using a switch to turn on a light, running a fan, running a fan with a resistor to make it run slower, playing music. She really liked it and has asked to ‘play’ some more already. Maybe she’ll follow in her momma and daddy’s footsteps after all . . . .
