Kinder + Ben = lots of fun! We finished up week 12 last Friday. I’m really enjoying going through this core again, it’s nice and easy and interesting.
Bible – Ben was tagging along with sister while she read The Beginner’s Bible for 1st grade, but now we are back on track for Ergermeier’s Storybook Bible. We just do one reading a day. He is up to the letter G for memorizing verses with Sing the Word from A to Z.
In history/social studies, we studied medieval times, ancient China, ancient Europe, and early Americas. We mostly stayed in our spines, a children’s encyclopedia and some fun Usborne books. We also studied some well known missionaries in I Heard Good News Today. We are caught up on adding figures to our timeline book.
For read alouds we finished My Father’s Dragon, Here’s A Penny, Mary on Horseback, and started In Grandma’s Attic and The House at Pooh Corner. We continue with an almost daily poetry reading.
Ben is doing a great job reading. It helps him with his speech as we are getting into a lot of blend words now and he has a harder time with “th” and “sh”, so he is slowly self correcting with some reminders from mommy. He loves being able to tell he is making progress so will often count how many pages he has left in his reader.
Benjamin loves his little brother — >
Since baby came along, I haven’t quite got science scheduled in a happy place yet. I am doing the kids separately plus science usually involved supplies, so I think that adds a little bit of an effort curve I have to get over in order to get it done. We are a couple weeks behind, but I think we’ll get in a groove soon. For Ben’s science, we use his children’s encyclopedia and were learning about animals. We did some light, water, and plant experiments. Ben enjoyed making a water tornado. We read a book about tadpoles and frogs and are currently in a book about eggs and chicks.
Math continues to be pretty easy for Ben. He is in the second book of Horizons K but we have slowed down to one page at a time. He’s pretty impressive with his simple math as he likes to keep ‘score’ with his little figures that he plays with. 😉
Extras – We’ve been having parties with our group; Valentine’s Day and Easter and park days. We went to the Natural History Museum, LACMA, and on a trip to the tide pools. The kids got to go with daddy to LegoLand a little after Joel was born and have been to Disney a couple times. Plus, both sets of grandparents have been out for a visit too. Monthly book report club and weekly PE.
