Benjamin has finished his history and language arts for Core A (or kindergarten)! We have a little bit of science left from when we got behind in the fall. I’ll post our plan for what we’ll call “Kinder and a Half” to keep Ben busy until the fall when he’ll start 1st grade.
So what have we been doing? We actually had 6 weeks without a break so I don’t have a lot of pictures! For bible, we are still reading through Ergermeier’s and when we finish that up again, I’ll just have Benjamin start listening in on Hannah’s readings. He’s also been reviewing the A to Z verses that he has memorized.
In history/social studies, we finished up I Heard Good News Today and read a book called Wild Places about different climates around the world and the native peoples in those areas.
For Read Alouds, we finished Dr. Dolittle, our two poetry books, Five True Dog Stories, and James Herriot’s Treasury. We also read The Hundred Dresses and Dolphin Treasure.
In Language Arts, we finished up our I Can Read It Wordlists and Explode the Code 3 and studied suffixes, digraphs, and compound words. Benjamin read Cat in the Hat, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, A Fly Went By, A Big Ball of String, and The Story of Balto. His reading is doing really well and his writing is very nice, he just doesn’t like to do it. 😉
Science has been fun with topics like gravity, floating, friction, magnets, light, electricity, sound, clocks, telephones, refrigerators, microwaves, cars, diggers, tractors, trains, planes, and under the sea! Ben really enjoyed this experiment where the beans soaked up the water and ‘popped the top’ of the container. He wanted to do it again.
We’re doing fine in math, he moved into the first grade set of worksheets and is chugging along.
For extras right now, we do park day once a week with our group. They also have a monthly activity or outing. Last month, we tried out the new trampoline place at the mall called Urban Air. We try to spend a little bit of time each day on our land. The olders have been ‘exploring’ along the banks of the creek. Now that the water is down a little, they don’t have to climb through brush. Benjamin has been learning how to make cookies because I won’t buy him ones from the store and we got him a larger bike without trainers that he is so close to being tall enough for so we need to work on that. Oh, and we had that pet snail (pictured above) for a few days!
Adam S Awesome job Ben (and parents)! I’m happy when I get in 30 minutes with Isaac right now.
Rebecca Diltz Nate Moehring He is learning all day long. . . you need to give yourself credit for everything, not just the dedicated ‘school’ time. smile emoticon
Adam S I take heed in his reading really well, he’s on 1st grade Singapore math (though in fairness he started on Kinder B so we’ve actually only finished 1 semester of math) and being able to write all his letters (though, like Ben sounds, not wanting to do it too much)
Judy S Congratulations, Ben!
Maria T Great job Ben !
