10 days. That’s how long I can keep chicks alive. Boo. Wasn’t thinking and left them and the dog unsupervised yesterday. frown emoticon

Christina M Once a dog kills a chicken it doesn’t usually stop…
Rebecca Diltz Nate Moehring Yeah, I know. We had only had them out in the yard with her a couple times so far. The plan was to get her used to them and wait until they were older. I hate it when I do stupid stuff.
Jenny B Honestly, I would have never thought that a dog would kill chickens. I’m picturing sheep herding dogs and how they live in harmony with the animals. I guess it all depends on the animals they are with and the breed of the dog?
Christina M Most dogs will kill chickens. Maybe not a chihuahua or weiner dog.
Jenny B Wow! Do they eat them or is it just for sport?
Rebecca Diltz Nate Moehring Jenny B, they eat them. That is why once they have done so, its very difficult to break. Grr.
Jenny B Maaaan, so sorry.
Emily L I’m sorry! That stinks. frown emoticon
Hannah B Predator prey instinct. Even “herding/working” dogs can go off reservation with livestock and kill, sometimes just for fun.
Might be hard to do in your situation considering your dog’s newly found trust, but I have had good luck breaking my dogs from bothering the stock (goats/chickens) by taking them to do chores on a short choke leash and correcting them anytime they begin to look interested in the stock. They are not allowed off leash until they show zero interest for several days. Has worked well for both the hound mutt and the lab”ish” mutt. Our other two have been good right from the start, but already understood verbal correction when we started with chickens.
Judy B Oh how sad
Hannah M So sad ,wish we could keep them longer!
Melanie A Whoops! Well, okay, on to round two of chicken farming smile emoticon
Rebecca Diltz Nate Moehring Yep.
Kim M This is the reason we DONT have chickens yet. Sorry Becca!
Sarah R Sorry to hear. It happened to our first set of chicks, too.
Amy M Bahaha what did the kids say?
Rebecca Diltz Nate Moehring They are doing ok. I don’t think we had them long enough to be very attached and of course they weren’t collecting eggs yet. Joel keeps walking to the coop looking for them.
Julie M The same thing happened to my sister with baby chicks and ducklings. Dogs and little birdies don’t mix well. The cages look good but dogs are too smart for them.
