Joel has finished 6 weeks of preschool!
It is so different from when Hannah started and we tried to stretch her time out as much as possible throughout the day and add in supplemental stuff. With Joel, I have to fit him in between the others and usually just get the bare minimum. But he also already done a lot of stuff that you would do as additional activities, like counting and building with blocks, etc. Also, the olders help me with some of the reading, especially when it is a book they remember. 🙂
We are doing Read With Me Bible for his personal bible readings. Joel got it for his birthday. We just do one story a day. He also likes to bring it to church like his siblings, but we leave it there all the time. Haha. We also have selections of songs out of WeeSing Bible Songs and poems out of Poems and Prayers for the Very Young.
We’ve had so many fun readings of favorite read alouds, but I’m just going to list them all. The theme for P3/4 is Fun, Fiction, and Fairy Tales. Goodnight Moon, Baby Says, Noah’s Ark, If You Give A Mouse A Cookie, George Shrinks, From Head to Toe, Make Way for Ducklings, Kate and the Big Snow, Busy Timmy, Guess Who Lives Here, Baby Listens, Baby Dear, Baby Looks, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Freight Train, A Boy, A Dog, and A Frog, Guess How Much I Love You, I Hear, I See, I Touch, Titch, Good Night Gorilla, U>Ten, Nine, Eight, I Am A Bunny, Thumblina, Whose Mouse Are You, Dan the Dunce, Emperor’s New Clothes, U>Ugly Duckling, The Nightengale, The Selfish Giant, and Jack and the Beanstalk. For quite a few of these, I have a DVD set where the book is narrated and animated so we love to watch those that line up. Joel’s favorite is Chicka Chicka Boom Boom so we add that in most days to the assigned readings.
Every now and then Joel will ask for a worksheet when the others are doing seat work. I have an old pre-k workbook that we never finished so we give him pages out of that. He knows most of his colors and shapes and counts well to somewhere in the teens, but we could work a little on letter and number print recognition as he is ready.
Our current science book is The Flip Flap Body Book. Tons of fun!
Social studies/ cultures is currently a book called What Do People Do All Day? that explores many different jobs.
We usually get done in less than 30 min a day, but sometimes have to break it up depending on other distractions. Sometimes I skip him if we need to go out in the afternoon and I don’t really like doing that so I need to figure out how to fit him in better in the morning time so he gets more consistency.
Extras for him is getting to tag along to everything his siblings are doing. Right now that includes Rangers, and park day, and piano, and service projects, and Hannah’s volleyball practice where he gets to be a ball boy if he feels like it. We had Easter festivities, a camping trip at the Diltz land, and he likes making stuff with clay.
Melanie T That is terrific!
Debbie D Check out sensory bins for preschoolers on Pinterest! I use them all the time, especially for science. They will keep their interest for along time
