Joel is chugging along in preschool. He has started to ask for worksheets when the olders have seat work and he is starting to do much smaller “letter” type squiggles on his drawings. So I may start him on some tracing work soon. He has a really light load but I still find it hard to fit him in at a regular time. We tend to read when he wants to, I’ll usually read school books first and then he can pick his favorites for rereading.
I recently ordered the new books that have been added to the core so when we are done with the next set of weeks, I’ll be ready to add them in before going through the whole core again.
We read a daily passage out of the Read to Me Bible and at least repeat a bible verse for a week. We’ve been in 1st Book of Fairy Tales with a variety of fairy tales and we watch the corresponding scholastic movie, if we have one.
I have a prek skills workbook that he does when he asks for school. We’ve been working on colors and shapes and comparing (shorter, taller, etc). He doesn’t like coloring though. We also read Go, Dog, Go and selections from The Harper Collins Treasury. We had a unit of Eloise Wilkin books from a treasury we have. We’ve read a few Hans Christian Andersen stories and we also have a 20th Century Treasury that we’ve spent a lot of time in.
For science, we read Our Animals Friends at Maple Hill Farm and The Usborne Flip Flap Body Book. For social studies, we’ve been reading about occupations in What Do People Do All Day?.
We also have at least one weekly poem and nursery rhyme.
Pictures of all the books we have been reading can be seen here.
Joel of course gets to tag along on most of the olders adventures, field trips, and activities. We attended cousin Brendan’s graduation, spent a weekend at the lake, they spent a week with each of the grandparents while Nate and I were in Alaska, he came with us on our mission trip to Oklahoma City, he went on all our adventures as we toured Waco with my cousins, and he did really well on our trip to NY and back. No wonder it took us since April to get 6 weeks of school done. 🙂
