Benjamin’s 3rd Grade (US History I) is going along quite well. We got through the revolution and have achieved the writing of the constitution. Whew!
Bible – Benjamin has a Royal Ranger bible reading assignment currently, so he has been doing that in lieu of his school readings. During this unit, we finished Hannah’s assigned reading of the New Testament, so we’ll start doing Ben’s during devotions and he’ll pick up his school assignments again. He also had weekly memory verses, but we are currently working on memorizing the “Give Me Liberty” speech by Patrick Henry.
In history/social studies, we have weekly readings on Native tribes in American Indian Prayer Guide. Our spines for history are Children’s Encyclopedia of American History, The Landmark History of the American People, Volume 1, and The Beginner’s American History. We read a fun book called If You Were There When They Signed the Constitution and we also watch a documentary called A More Perfect Union on YouTube. It was pretty well done.
Read Alouds have been interesting. We read Toliver’s Secret, Carry On Mr. Bowditch, and Justin Morgan Had a Horse. We also have weekly selections from A Child’s Introduction to Poetry.
Reading / LA is in a good rhythm. Each week we have spelling with Sequential Spelling, vocabulary in Wordly Wise 3000, Book 3, dictation, a cursive assignment, and a creative writing assignment.
During this unit, Benjamin read The Bears on Hemlock Mountain and Om-Kas-Toe.
In Science, we finished up a book called Mysteries and Marvels of Nature and worked on some fun experiments with radishes for a 6 week unit.
Benjamin has finished Horizons 3 so we are in an in between season right now. Not sure if I want to go ahead and start level 4 or save it for 4th grade. He is doing some math apps to keep his facts current. He enjoys math so I’m considering letting him go until he gets to harder content.
Extras of course are the best part of school. We still work on piano and Spanish on an almost daily basis. We have weekly play dates with two different families, a weekly park day, Royal Rangers, and various other outdoor activities. We also had a special trip to the Zoo and our homeschool Spelling Bee. I’ve also rearranged the schedule so the kids can help more with Joel, so Ben and Hannah have been helping with some of his reading and phonics learning.
