While the olders were finishing up their years’ and starting new ones, Joel was plodding along in his preschool work. We finished up week 18 (halfway) last week.
Joel gets a lot of bible. He listens in on our devotional time where we are currently reading through the whole bible for Hannah’s requirements, he has his Rainbows assignments, and we read from a children’s bible for his school time as well as try to memorize some short verses each week.
In history/social studies, we have a book called Things People Do that we finished up. We started a book called Stories from Africa.
Read Alouds are the meat of his school right now. We read excerpts from A Treasury of Mother Goose Rhymes, Uncle Wiggily’s Storybook, Stories From Around the World, The Children’s Book of Virtues, Lion Storyteller Bedtime Book, Eric Carle’s Animals Animals, and A Child’s Book of Art each week. We usually have one listening activity with American Tall Tales CD. We also read part of The Classic Tales of Brer Rabbit.
For language, we are working through a developmental workbook called Developing the Early Learner. It is designed to help me identify his learning styles and any areas we might have to work on. We have almost got our letter recognition down and most of the sounds. We use Leaf Frog Letter Factory and Dr. Seuss’s ABC. We also have a book called First Thousand Words that is like a seek and find and helps with vocabulary.
Science is fun. We completed Berenstain Bear’s Big Book of Science and Nature, The Year at Maple Hill Farm, and started What’s Under the Sea.
Math is non directed. We count things and do small math problems throughout the day.
For extras, we have a weekly song that we work on and some handwriting workbooks as well as some current events with God’s Big World. Joel has weekly Rainbows at church as well as Hawaiian Falls visits. Joel’s best buddy had a birthday party that we attended as well as a few playdates. Of course, being the littlest, he gets to tag along to all of our other extras like Ben and Hannah’s basketball games and field trips. We also had our MN trip, Grandma’s retirement, and lake days.
