^Photo above is from the District Celebration where Hannah was crowned an Honor Star. 🙂
We started in the middle of August when all the other Waco schools were also starting and we actually did 6 weeks without any interruptions, but it has been a few weeks now since we finished week 6 and I’m finally getting around to writing it up.
With the kids getting into higher levels and having to do a little bit more of the work independently, I made an agreement with them to be home for at least three full days a week. This meant pulling back from some of our activities we were doing last year. So far, it has been a good decision for us. Things have gone a little more smoothly, especially adding Joel in with some kinder level work.
Hannah is in 6th grade and we are doing our second round of World History (first half). This time we are using the Story of the World as our spine with an Usborne Encyclopedia as supplemental.
Our morning devotions have been focused on helping Hannah achieve her bible reading merit for Friend’s Club. When we get to a new book, we watch the bible project video for it and then read through it. We have also been enjoying singing Joel’s song of the week. The olders still enjoy this silly time with little brother and he goes around singing them the rest of the day. Hannah also has independent school bible readings and a devotional book that we are working through. She memorized all of 1 Corithians 13 during this first unit. We also do a weekly current event assignment using her World Teen subscription.
Our read alouds for the first unit followed our study of Ancient Egypt and some of the cultures of bible times in the middle east. We read The Golden Goblet and God King. We also have readings from Favorite Poems Old and New for our poetry.
Language is Hannah’s strong subject. We do Sequential Spelling 3 for spelling, Keys to Good Language for grammar, and Wordly Wise 3000, Book 6 for vocabulary. She does a weekly cursive assignment, dictation, and creative assignments.
For readers, this unit Hannah read Mara, Daughter of the Nile and Hittite Warrior.
Hannah is working through Horizons 5 doing one lesson a day for math. We had been going a little slower, but have picked up the pace and are currently into long division.
Science will be fun this year. A little bit of chemistry! We are working though an Usborne book called What’s Science All About? and a book called Chemically Active.
We continue to do independent work on music (piano) and Spanish (Duolingo). Hannah has been added to our worship team as a keyboard substitute as well as being in the rotation as a singer. She has also written a couple original worship songs for the piano and even played and sang them at church. It has been a joy to watch her blossom in this area.
Hannah also decided she wanted to play another season of volleyball and, of course, when we went in for tryouts, they didn’t have enough coaches. So Mommy gets to coach one more season. I think she may try for the homeschool team in town next year (they play against local private schools) but it is nice to have one more ‘fun’ season before getting into a competitive league.
In other news, Hannah has ‘moved’ downstairs and is enjoying having her own bathroom (when we don’t have guests). She also has a weekly playdate with a friend we made last year who we wouldn’t normally get to see anymore, but we are making an effort to cultivate that friendship. And we had a short visit from Gram and PawPaw on their way home from their summer travels.
So, that’s what our first 6 weeks looked like!
This is really nice, Rebecca!
