This is just to document what we did for weeks 31-36 of P4/5 and then a few weeks of “extra” stuff before we started Kinder.
For bible, Joel follows along with the big kids during our morning devotionals and then we do an extra reading out of his children’s bible. Right now we are in the Jesus Calling one. He also has a short memory verse that we work on each week and we have a weekly nursery rhyme or children’s song that we sing during devotions.
History/social studies and Read Alouds are blended at this level and include selections from Then and Now, The Classic Tales of Brier Rabbit, Stories From Around the World, The Complete Adventures of Peter Rabbit, New Toes for Tia, A Treasure of Mother Goose Rhymes, The Lion Storyteller Bedtime Book, Milly Molly Mandy, Uncle Wiggly’s Story Book, The Children’s Book of Virtues, and poems out of Eric Carle’s Animals Animals. Sometimes we also study some art in A Child’s Book of Art.
Reading / LA: We had some developmental workbooks called Developing the Early Learner that we finished. We read Dr. Seuss’ ABC for the 26th time officially and finished up First Thousand Words for vocabulary. Even though he was still in preschool I had started him on LAK because he was interested in writing letters and starting to sound out words. We worked week 9-15 this unit. He has been doing well learning how to read. We worked on the letters P, S, I, C, and D. We used My First Picture Dictionary, Get Set For the Code, Go For the Code, and copy work to practice out letters. Then we started reading using Fun Tales #1-6 and a few other easy readers I have on my shelf. He likes to try to guess the words so we have to keep changing it up on him.
Science: Science is so much fun at this level, just learning about everything. We read How to Dig a Hole to the Other Side of the World and studied animal camouflage in Why Do Tigers Have Stripes?
Math isn’t formalized yet. I’ll be starting him on Horizons K when we begin Kinder.
Extras are always the best part. Joel has very much been enjoying his weekly ninja gymnastics class. He also gets the God’s Big World magazine for current events. We had Thanksgiving, Christmas, and a family vacation to Colorado during this unit. He got to try out sledding and skiing and build a snowman. Then we had an unexpected trip to MN for grandpa’s funeral so they got to play in the snow again. We have also started visits with sister at the end of January and Joel has probably been having the hardest time sharing our attention. But they also play very well together so I think it will all work out as they get used to each other. Then we celebrated his birthday with lots of friends and family!
Between: For the 3 weeks or so before I was ready to start Kinder we continued with our bible readings, continued selections from the Beatrix Potter Treasury, worked through a PreK Workbook and just kept right on with LAK. I’ll write up our plan for Kinder soon.
