As mentioned previously, we started out with Core A when Joel turned 5, but then Sonlinght released Core K as a stepping stone between P4/5 and A and I thought it would be a good fit for him. Turns out, we got Sister a little earlier than planned, and I think she’ll be able to tag along on Core K as well for the summer.
I have both kiddos come to devotions with the rest of us in the morning. We are reading through the bible for Hannah but I also found My First Hands On Bible for sister. It has recommended activities to do while you are reading the story to help them stay focused. All the kids have a prayer journal as well. Joel’s assigned bible for Core K is The One Year Bible for Children. We read one or two entries for school each day. The kids are doing weekly memory work. The songs for this year aren’t as catchy as I’d like so we are using JumpStart3 bible songs to help them stick.
In history/social studies we will be doing a one year American History trip. So far, we have read Maps and Globes, The Very First Americans, and sections of Heroes and Happenings Volume 1 and If You Lived in Colonial Times.
Read Alouds have been light and enjoyable. We have done Dolphin Adventure, Dolphin Treasure, Anna Hibiscus, Love From Anna Hibiscus, and are working through The World According to Humphrey. We use The Llama Who Had No Pajama for our poetry selections each week.
Reading / LA: Joel is doing Sonlight’s LAK. We do Handwriting Without Tears Level K, letter posters, My First Picture Dictionary, Get Set For The Code, weekly copywork, narration, and letter games, and Fun Tales. I add in Sing Spell Read and Write Kinder books to add variety as we learn to read. We added in Sister, and she is going to do LA1 which basically just moves up a level in HWT and Explode the Code. If it turns out too easy for her, I’ll fast track her through it and move up to LA2.
Science: The new Sonlight Core K science is backordered so we haven’t started that yet. With all the other changes going on, it hasn’t been terrible to not have that on the checklist. We’ll start on it when we get it. Joel likes to help with baking and crafts so sometimes I’ll tell him he is doing science experiments. 🙂
Math: Joel is working through Horizons K and sister is doing Horizons 2.
Extras have been not so exciting as normal with everything shut down. We continued with ninja class but they were doing it on zoom until last week. The kids were very excited to go back to the gym! We’ve done a bit more jumping on the trampoline and going to the creek. The weather has been very nice.
So far, Kinder is pretty fun!
Kay B Congrats! Also, have you noticed that tree is now gone!
Rebecca Diltz Nate Moehring Yes, we go down there a lot. Have you guys been working on it?
Kay B A woodworking friend came for it. Of course, Mike B. brought his tractor to help load. Great guy!
