Halfway through Kinder

Joel and Sister have been doing ok with our tour of American History. I’ve decided that we need to separate them so I can do more one on one with Sister and Joel misses having one on one too. I’ll continue Joel with Core K and move sister into Core A as her official 3rd grade work.

We do morning devotions by listening to Hannah’s bible reading, then doing a selection from My First Hands On Bible. All the kids have a prayer journal each day as well. The assigned bible for Core K is The One Year Bible for Children. We read one entries for school each day. Joel and Sister both work on their Ranger / Girl’s memory verse and if they have that down, then we do the school assignment.

In history/social studies we have sections of Heroes and Happenings Volume 1 as our spine. We finished George Vs George which was a fun compare/contrast of George Washington and King George. We also read The Adventures of Lewis and Clark and started Boxcar Children 2.

Read Alouds are usually fun and light. We read Lulu and the dog From the Sea, Roxie and the Hooligans, and Just Dance. We use The Llama Who Had No Pajama for our poetry selections each week.

Reading / LA: Joel is doing Sonlight’s LAK. We do Handwriting Without Tears Level K, letter posters, My First Picture Dictionary, Go Set For The Code, weekly copywork, narration, and letter games, and Fun Tales. I add in Sing Spell Read and Write Kinder books to add variety as we learn to read. Joel only has one more week to go.
Sister is doing LA1 which basically just moves up a level in HWT and Explode the Code and adds a weekly spelling list. She is reading the I Can Read It! books and some SSRW 1st grade readers I have.

Science: We got our backordered books and jumped right in. We started with an ant unit and some related experiments. So far we have gotten two weeks done. We have been using Ants (Usborne), Discover and Do Science, and National Geography’s Little Kids First Big Book of Why.

Math: Joel is working through Horizons K and Sister is doing Horizons 2.

Extras are still the best part of homeschooling even with the virus putting a damper on things. We play outside at least an hour in the morning. Joel and Sister both attend the ninja gymnastics class on Fridays. Joel does Starfall or Adventure Academy for bonus work and Sister does Prodigy to help build up her math skills. During this past unit, our family decided to open a game room in McGregor, so the kids have been enjoying playing there (if their school work is done). We also spent a lot of time watching Hannah play jr hi volleyball. Joel got to go to his first kid’s camp (2 nights) in July and had a lot of fun.
