I separated Joel and sister during the history readings so this is just a Joel update.
We do morning devotions by listening to Hannah’s bible reading, then doing a selection from a children’s bible that we like. All the kids have a prayer journal each day as well. The assigned bible for Core K is The One Year Bible for Children. We read one entry for school each day. Joel works on his Ranger memory work and then work on memorizing one verse per letter of the alphabet.
In history/social studies we have sections of Heroes and Happenings Volume 1 as our spine. For our readers we read Abandoned on the Wild Frontier, The Amazing Impossible Erie Canal, and You Wouldn’t Want to Be An American Pioneer.
Read Alouds have been fun and light. This unit had Boxcar Children 2, 26 Fairmount Avenue, The Silver Balloon, Violet Mackerel’s Brilliant Plot, and Travels With My Family. We use The Llama Who Had No Pajama for our poetry selections each week.
Reading / LA: Joel has finished up Sonlight’s LAK awhile back. I thought about trying him on LA1 but he isn’t quite ready for it so for now, we are filling in with books at his level and doing some free Starfall. He seems to be enjoying the Teach Your Monster to Read App as well. We will save LA1 until Feb when he starts 1st grade.
Science: I do science with Joel and sister and we are doubling up content for the most part. We don’t usually do the experiments. Sonlight made a great set of videos for each week that I’ve been using instead. We finished up our unit on ants, then reptiles using the Usborne Reptiles book, and then rainforests with the Usborne Rainforest one. I think he enjoys science because he’ll tell people about the things he has been learning. Our experiments come out of Discover and Do Science, and we usually have a light reading from National Geography’s Little Kids First Big Book of Why each week.
Math: Joel is working through Horizons K, almost done. We’ll take a break from school math and just do fun apps until January.
Extras have been a little toned down this set of weeks. Joel’s extracurricular is ninja class on Fridays which we get to most weeks. He has games at Connections almost every day as long as school is done and we have our date night switch off with friends each week. Daddy gets them outside or to do a workout a couple times a week. We volunteer at the food pantry once a month and he was a big helper at our Oct outreach where we had a game table at the McGregor Hay Barn Festival.
