2nd 6 Weeks of 5th Grade

We are cruising along in our Eastern Hemisphere studies. Benjamin and I have both enjoyed the books we have been reading about other cultures.

For morning devotions we are continuing by helping Hannah finish her reading plan for Girl’s. Then we all have bible/prayer journals. Then Benjamin has an assigned reading for school and memory work.

Our spines for history/social studies is Journey to the Eastern Hemisphere and 100 Gateway Cities. Benjamin has notebook pages for each country and a final project. We have studied South Korea, Japan, and Russia. We also do a weekly current event activity with our World Kids subscription.

This unit we read The Master Puppeteer, Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, and I Rode a Horse of Milk White Jade. Our poetry book this year is called All the Small Poems

Reading / LA is in a good groove. He has spelling in Sequential Spelling 3, a cursive assignment (usually his memory verse), grammar in Keys to Good Language 5, and vocabulary in Wordly Wise 3000, Book 5. He has a weekly creative assignment or report.

Ben is reading all his readers to himself. The books he read this unit were The Kite Fighters, The Big Wave, Born in the Year of Courage, The Cat Who Went to Heaven, Burying the Sun, and The Turning. Some of the topics in these were pretty advanced but he did well with them.

We started science a little late but we are caught up to the rest of our subjects. We use The Usborne Complete Book of the Human Body, Food and Nutrition for Every Kid, and Blood and Guts as our spines right now.

Ben does well in math. We are working through Horizons 5 now.

Extras are still a lot of fun. Ben has really enjoyed the time we are spending at Connections playing with friends. He helps when asked but most of the time plays on his favorite games. Usually it even helps him get his morning work done before we leave. Ben celebrated his 11th birthday with friends playing a live version of Among Us that we made up. We also had our usual trips for holidays and family time. He still does some Duolingo spanish and occasionally some Prodigy. He does help watch the littles while I do school with Hannah and vice versa, that helps us stay on schedule.
