Joel finished up week 30 a couple weeks ago, so we are on track to finish right before we start 1st grade after his birthday in February.
We do morning devotions by listening to Hannah’s bible reading, singing a couple songs, saying our prayers, then writing in his prayer journal. The assigned bible for Core K is The One Year Bible for Children. We read one entry for school each day. Joel works on one or two memory verses per week.
In history/social studies we have sections of Heroes and Happenings Volume 1 as our spine. For our readers we read You Wouldn’t Want to Be An American Pioneer and If You Lived At the Time of the Civil War.
Read Alouds have gotten a little longer. We read The Adventures of a South Pole Pig and started The Terrible Two. We use The Llama Who Had No Pajama for our poetry selections each week.
Reading / LA: Joel is in between on LA, but has recently turned a corner on his reading. He is ‘chunking’ and remembering the rules and able to get through the stories much better. He’ll be ready for LA1 next month. We do daily reading, a worksheet from ABC Mouse, and Starfall for extras right now.
Science: We have been doing Joel and Ginny together for science. This unit we read Rainforests, Bees and Wasps, and From Seed to Plant. Our experiments come out of Discover and Do Science, and we usually have a light reading from National Geographic’s Little Kids First Big Book of Why each week.
Math: Joel finished up Horizons K this unit and we have just been filling in with Prodigy until we start 1st grade.
Joel’s main extracurricular is ninja class on Fridays. He has games at Connections almost every day as long as school is done and we have our date night switch off with friends each week. They play on the trampoline usually at least an hour a day and Joel has been ‘in charge’ of the chickens and picking up eggs. We had our normal family trips for the holidays, our adoption date, and we squeezed in a trip to Kentucky with friends.
