There’s No Place Like My Room – by Hannah Moehring
I walk through the door into my room. I take a deep breath, and I am overcome with a sense of peace and content. Looking around at all my favorite things, I start to smile. Sometimes a cat or two will be laying on my bed, the covers and sheets spread all around them (I almost never make my bed). My most recently claimed “favorite book” is on the shelf nearest, where I can reach it while laying down. There is also a lamp next to my bed for reading when it is dark.
However, when it is not nighttime, the sunlight happily shines through my window. I open the curtains. From the window I can see our backyard. I can watch the chickens running around, looking for bugs, and sometimes a cat on the hunt, or a dog finding its next place to use the restroom. I can even see a heron or egret fishing for frogs in the pond behind the backyard every now and then. I close the curtains, quickly missing the warmth of the sun.
After opening the curtains again, my eyes wander to the left of my bed, taking in everything on my desk. Some people would call it a mess, but I know where everything is. Is it still a mess if it’s organized in my own way? The pencils, markers, pens, and crayons all have their own buckets and there is a box for all my paper. Some of it is lined and some is plain white, but the majority is colored. Random art supplies go in a set of drawers right next to my desk, so whenever I need them, they are not too far.
There is a guitar stand left of my desk, but there is no guitar. No, the guitar is in a different stand in a different room. Instead, the stand has become a rack for all my favorite purses and backpacks, which there are plenty of, ready to grab when leaving the room. They have all the necessities in them, including some extra stuff like gum or little games and toys.
Now that I have looked over the left side of my room, I turn to the right and the closet is the next thing I see. The doors are almost always open – I only close them when I don’t have time to put away the clean laundry and am forced to stuff it inside. I look at my shirts and dresses hanging, my pants and shorts folded neatly on shelves, and my extra pairs of shoes stuffed in the corner. But they are only clothes, and I look away soon. Continuing to the right, I see my huge set of cubby holes.
Some have boxes in them but most are being used as bookshelves to store future candidates for the title “favorite book”. Others have more art supplies that I couldn’t fit on my crowded desk or drawers. Even others have random knick-knacks, keep-sakes, trophies, toys. One hole is specially dedicated to even more bags I hardly ever use but won’t get rid of. I keep telling myself I will use them someday, so there they are, just waiting. In front of the cubby holes, all lined up, are my favorite pairs of shoes, some for every occasion – tennis shoes, boots, high heels, and last but not least, slippers.
When I walk in my room, I am overcome with a feeling I cannot even describe. It is sort of a mix of lots of emotions. Many things have happened in or around my room, ending in many ways. Sometimes I hang out with friends there – that makes me happy. Sometimes I am scared or sad and end up under my covers, crying. But most of the time, I just feel calm. Tranquil, undisturbed, relaxed. My room is the place where I go to be myself. No one messing with me, not worrying about school, and stuff like that.
I love my room because, in a way, it seems to solve all my problems temporarily. When I walk into my room, I am allowed to just take a few minutes off, away from the world. Cuddling with a cat, drawing, reading, just something to have some fun. I can’t do that in any other room and I don’t think you could do that unless it was your room, either. It has to be my room. My room is special for me, and that’s why there’s no place like my room.
