6 weeks of Eastern Hemisphere left. Ben finished up week 30 at the beginning of June so I am backdating this.
We enjoy our regular morning devotions. Benjamin also has his own section of scripture to read each day and continues with his memory work on a weekly basis.
In history/social studies, our main spine is Journey to the Eastern Hemisphere. We read Living Water in the Desert, Mary Slessor: Into Calabar, and A Long Walk to Water as missionary stories. We did a unit on Saudi Arabia and Africa. We have a couple selections each week from 100 Gateway Cities. He also stays up with current events with his World Kids magazine each week.
Read Alouds included Seven Daughters and Seven Sons, and Cornelia and the Audacious Escapades of the Somerset Sisters. We also have a poetry reading from All the Small Poems a couple times a week.
In language, we do spelling with Sequential Spelling 3, grammar with Keys to Good Language 5, and vocabulary with Wordly Wise 3000 – Book 5. He also does a creative assignment each week. I still have him do one assignment a week in cursive to keep that skill.
For readers this unit, Benjamin read Habibi, King of the Wind, and A Girl Named Disaster to himself.
Science continues with our anatomy year. The Usborne Complete Book of the Human Body, The Boy’s Body Book, and Food and Nutrition for Every Kid. He also had a fun book called Improve your Survival Skills. Not much in the way of experiments this year.
Ben is still doing well in Horizons 5 for math.
Extras keep us happy. Ben seems to enjoy karate twice a week and Royal Rangers. He got a gold trail award in May. We had multiple trips to Bandera to visit Gram and also a trip to Port Aransas with Diltz/Millers. He got to go to PowWow for Ranger Camp. He also is our tech guy for our worship services at Active Love and sometimes he helps at Connections.
Kerri H That magazine sounds cool. I’ll have to keep it on my radar for Harry one day. I’ve been looking for a safe way to give him a daily dose of current events.
