We got through weeks 19-24 of Core A without too many interruptions. Joel is doing well with his 1st grade level content and work load.
For bible, we have morning devotions together. Hannah is finishing her bible reading for Girl’s Ministries. For school, we are working through The One Year Bible for Children. Joel also memorizes his verse for the week for school and Rangers.
In history, our main spine is The Usborne Internet Linked Children’s Encyclopedia supplemented with Usborne Book of Wild Places. We also add things to our timeline at the end of every week. We finished up The Good News Must Go Out.
For read alouds we read Twenty and Ten, The Light At Tern Rock, Mary on Horseback, and The Kitchen Madonna. We started No Children, No Pets. We also read weekly selections from The Bill Martin Jr Big Book of Poetry.
Readers include a word list book that helps us recognize groups of letters that make certain sounds (think “ight”). Joel read selections from I Can Read It, Book 3.
We are on level with LA1. We have weekly spelling words, reading lists, grammar with Explode the Code 2 and moved into Explode the Code 3, a cursive assignment, and a weekly creative assignment.
For math we are in the middle of Horizons 1. Joel is good at math but dislikes the ‘practice’.
We are also on pace with Science A. He has almost daily readings from The Children’s Encyclopedia and we do a weekly assignment and sometimes experiment from Discover and Do Level K.
Joel has karate twice a week and Rangers on Wednesdays. He has a weekly piano lesson and daily practice. His main responsibility at home is feeding the chickens and collecting the eggs. During this unit we had a trip to the zoo and a trip to Hurricane Harbor. Joel got to be on a float and on stage at Founder’s Day with his karate group. We had a visit from Grandpa and Grandma Diltz and Gram who wanted to see one or two of Hannah’s vball games. And Joel got to help out at Connections and Active Love Church with all the fun stuff we do there. We had a Pancakes at the Park, monthly blessing bag packing and delivery, Parents’ Night Outs, and we hosted bouncies at the McGregor Hay Barn Festival.
