Halfway Through 6th Grade

We managed to get six weeks done in about two months so that is pretty good for us. Benjamin has 18 weeks left (1/2 way) and we planned out to be finished by the end of July. That gives us a little wiggle room before starting 7th grade in the fall.

Our church is doing The Story this year so we will be doing that during our family devotions. Benjamin also has a school reading each day, a weekly chapter from International Children’s Bible Field Guide, a weekly memory verse, and adds stickers to his timeline book on Fridays.

In history/social studies, we are finished up Story of the World: Ancient Times and also use Usborne Encyclopedia of World History as a supplement. Every now and then we read a section of a little booklet that lines up the history of the bible with the period we are studying called The Kingdom Strikes Back. We were mostly in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. Benjamin does a current event assignment on Fridays with World Kids magazine.

Read Alouds this unit were The Silver Branch and A Single Shard. We also started Flame Over Tara. I really appreciate still being able to have that personal time each day with him. Our poetry book for the year is Favorite Poems Old and New

In language, he has spelling with Sequential Spelling 3, grammar with Keys to Good Language 6, vocabulary with Wordly Wise 3000, Book 6, a cursive assignment, and a creative assignment each week. He got a little lazy with his work and I had to threaten loss of gaming time and he stepped it back up again.

Benjamin’s readers are interesting living books that usually follow a young man in the time period we are studying. He finished up The Bronze Bow and The Ides of April.

Out science main spines are What’s Science All About? and Chemically Active. He has been able to do most of the experiments on his own which is very nice because I just can’t seem to squeeze them in.

Math is Horizons 6. He doesn’t like long division. Haha.

Benjamin’s main extras include weekly Royal Rangers and karate. He tested for his orange belt at the end of February and he says he really likes karate. He is a good helper with church events even though he doesn’t like talking to people and he has been my main helper at Connections birthday parties keeping the kids happy and helping them play the games while I talk to the parents. Fun things we did this unit include our last trip to 6 Flags, a destination wedding in St. Thomas, taking care of little guy, and snow in Waco (we hosted day camp on one school off day). We had Hannah and Nate’s birthdays and Gram came to visit for Joel’s birthday. Diltz and Miller came up for the day.
