Halfway through 4th Grade

Ginny finished up week 18 of Core B+C at the end of April. She is getting into a better routine of doing a good job the first time though it is still a struggle.

For bible we all have a devotion together. Right now we are working through The Story with our church. For school, she reads directly out of her bible the assigned passages and works on the weekly memory verse.

In history/social studies, our spines are The Usborned Time Traveler and The Usborne Book of World History. For social studies, we read selections from Window on the World. And for geography, we are working through Geography Songs

Read Alouds are fun and sometimes a little challenging for Ginny. But for the most part, we are doing better at sitting for longer periods of time and following the storyline. We read Detectives in Togas while we studied Rome, then Sticks Across the Chimney when we studies the Vikings. We have selections from Aesop for Children and 104 Poems of Whimsy and Wisdom for poetry and supplemental.

Ginny says she enjoys math but we are still finding gaps and ‘learning how to learn’. Continuing to work through Horizons 3 and using Prodigy as supplemental and for practice.

Reading / LA: We finished up the last two weeks of LA2 with Explode the Code 6Wagon WheelsTitanic Lost and Found, Wordly Wise A, and spelling. We went straight into LA3 and got another six weeks done. So we are getting a week done in about 3 days, sometimes 4. We’ll eventually get on level with that as well. In LA3 we have grammar in Phonics C, a weekly cursive assignment, vocabulary with Wordly Wise B, spelling, and weekly creative assignments. She also read to herself the following books: Clara and the Bookwagon, The Long Way to a New Land, The Long Way WestwardPrairie SchoolKeep the Lights Burning Abbie, and Riding the Pony Express.

Science is caught up to the same Core B week, yay. She worked through What is the World Made Of?, Usborne Lift-the-Flap Period Table (super fun), and Marie Curie’s Search for Radium. For experiments we use Discover and Do: 2nd Grade Science Experiments and as supplements we read one spread of See How It’s Made each week.

Ginny is rocking the extracurriculars. Our little guy went back to his parents early in this unit so that gave us a little bit of breathing room but then we got some chicks to keep us busy. She has piano once a week, Royal Rangers on Wednesdays, karate twice a week. She tried out her first sport, basketball. She played on the same team with our friends and Joel. Most of them had never played before so it was fun to see them all improve over the season. She made a few baskets toward the end. We had VBS over Spring Break and she participated in all the crafts and events we run at Connections and for the church. We had a friend’s wedding, a field trip to watch the llamas get sheared, and some fun Easter activities that included a cross walk, a seder dinner, and some egg hunts. We even had to hunker down at Connections one day for a tornado warning which stressed her out a little bit but we made it.
