2nd 6 Weeks of 3rd Grade

Joel is staying on track with his siblings as far as school year goes.

In bible, he participates in our family devotions each morning, has school readings, and school memory passages. He also has memory work for children’s class.

In history/social studies, our main spines are A Child’s History of the World and Usborne Book of World History. We read through the Usborne Time Traveler: Knights and Castles section this unit. We use Window on the World for country studies and he is working through Geography Songs to learn some geography. We have timeline and currents events on Fridays.

Read Alouds are fun. We read Eric the Red and Leif the Lucky, Tales of Robin Hood, The Door in the Wall, Adventures of Sir Lancelot the Great, and The Minstrel in the Tower. We have selections from Aesop for Children and 104 Poems of Whimsy and Wisdom each week.

In LA we are still using assigned spelling lists. Joel is starting to do better at paying attention to how he is supposed to spell words instead of how he wants to. We have a weekly cursive assignment, Phonics C for grammar, Wordly Wise B for vocabulary, as well as our weekly writing assignment.

Joel read The Secret Valley, Third Grade Detectives #1, .The Chalk Box Kid, and The Paint Brush Kid. He finishes his assigned reading quickly so I add on an extra book for time each day to keep his reading practice going.

Science spines are DK Did You Know Science and The Story of Inventions. Joel also finished up First Encyclopedia of Seas and Oceans. He is getting better at doing his weekly experiments by himself.

Math is Horizons 3. Chugging along. He does well in math though he says he doesn’t like it.

Joel attended a soccer camp in October and had a trip to Glen Rose to see the dinosaur tracks with the Coopers. Our church hosted a good news club at the elementary on Wednesdays and Joel was able to participate in that as well. He tags along to all the other sports, church, and Connections events. He takes care of the chickens and picks up the eggs each day. His favorite event is Parents’ Night Out every other week because he enjoys playing on the bouncy and with his friends on video games.
