All the kids finished up week 24 at the end of February. Joel is cruising along in 3rd grade and pretty much knows the routine.
In bible, he participates in our family devotions each morning, has school readings, and school memory passages. He also has memory work for children’s class at church. He usually does really well with scripture memory.
In history/social studies, our main spines are still A Child’s History of the World and Usborne Book of World History. We continue to use Window on the World for country studies and he is still working through Geography Songs to learn world geography. We have timeline and currents events on Fridays. This unit we had an extra book Peter The Great about said person.
Read Alouds for this unit were Strawberry Girl and The Twenty-One Balloons. We also have selections from Aesop for Children and 104 Poems of Whimsy and Wisdom each week.
LA follows the same pattern each week. We have a weekly spelling list, cursive assignment, Phonics C for grammar, Wordly Wise B for vocabulary, as well as our weekly creative writing assignment.
For school Joel read Viking Adventure, The House on Walenska Street, and Cora Frear. He gets additional reading as he finished his assigned reading quickly. Been working through some elementary level books.
Science spines are still DK Did You Know Science and The Story of Inventions. He has a weekly experiment from Discover and Do: 3rd Grade that usually gets done on Saturdays. He had a few extra books thrown in the mix this unit: Magic School Bus and the Electric Trip, Electrical Wizard: How Nikola Tesla Lit Up the World, and What Makes a Magnet?.
Math is Horizons 3. Mostly does well. Working on some fractions and division lately.
Joel got to participate in Little Dribblers in McGregor this unit. It was a well run league and was a good experience for him. His team was pretty good so he didn’t get a lot of play time but I think he learned a lot. He also got to attend a bit of Benjamin’s bball games and practices. Gram came for a long visit in February for some of the birthdays and our Daddy Daughter Dance so Joel got to go on a couple of extra outings. They went to the zoo and also to the Waco Mammoth exhibit. Benjamin’s team made it to the state tournament for basketball so the kids went for the first day but then got to have a fun weekend at Grandma and Grandpa’s and attending cousin softball and basketball games (and driving the trail hog). Oh, and he turned 9 with a good report from the doctor. Overall, a pretty good couple of months.
