1st 6 Weeks of 9th Grade

Benjamin is getting into his groove with 9th grade. He is actually skipping a core into core 200 because he will take American History as a dual credit class. So we are doing history of the church this year which is a world history credit.

For bible Benjamin is joining our church in our yearly bible reading plan. He also has The Westminster Shorter Catechism as a spine for this year and is reading More Than A Carpenter for a theology book. He has a weekly scripture memory for school and usually for youth as well.

In history/social studies, we have three main spines that we read corresponding events from: The Story of Christianity, The 100 Most Important Events in Christian History, and From Jerusalem to Irian Jaya. This unit we completed a book called The Church of the East. He also has timeline and a current events assignment each week.

With Nate home to help with school we have tried to get back into making sure to read to Ben again, but some days he is still on his own. This unit we/he has read The Best of Father Brown and Oliver Twist. He also has weekly readings from A Child’s Anthology of Poetry.

Benjamin’s least favorite subject is writing so we have to push him most weeks to try a little harder. Usually once we’ve badgered him, he turns in good work. We are focusing on essay writing this year in preparation for SAT/ACT. He has a weekly creative writing assignment and a weekly short timed essay. He does vocabulary with Vocabulary From Classic Roots B and Wordly Wise 3000, Book 9, analogies with Analogies 1, and spelling with Sequential Spelling 6.

This year we are doing earth science. Hannah did Biology but I’m hoping Ben will be able to do that dual credit with a lab so we’re rearranging. We have Discovering Design with Earth Science which includes experiments, vocabulary, reviews, and tests. It is a little heavy on experiments so we are letting Ben pick 2 a week to complete.

Math is Math U See Geometry. For the most part math is pretty easy for Ben so he usually gets this done first.

For dual credit, Benjamin is taking the required first class called “Learning Frameworks”. It is basically how to be a successful college student. Going well so far.

Benjamin’s sport is basketball so he just got to ride along to all the volleyball activities and try to stay in shape during this unit. He babysits about once a week and helps out as our tech man at church. He walks the dogs for us (he really just wants to play on his phone). We had a youth glow in the dark party that was fun as well as our weekly classes. In August, the Diltz grandparents came to watch Hannah and Ginny play. Gram aslo came for volleyball and took the kids skating.
