Benjamin Top 10 games:
To start I’ll begin with board and card games. For number one I think I’ll put the version of Sequence my grandmother has, it is a fun game already and her board is organized especially nicely. In second place is a game that my family recently got: Uno Show ‘Em No Mercy, although it is very luck based and I have a small sample size of eight games played, I enjoyed it thoroughly and saw some semblances of strategy in the midst of the chaos. For third place I’ll say Five Crowns, it is a difficult strategy game, especially in late rounds. Although it does require a fair amount of luck, Five Crowns has more strategy than most card games.
Chess is my choice for fourth place. I have enjoyed it both casually with friends and family and back in 2023 had a period of time where I took it seriously online when I learned that it is not only a challenging game, but an art. At fifth place is the detective game Clue. It is purely skillful and requires strategy to discover the correct room, weapon and murderer. Sixth place goes to Nertz/Grouch, a hybrid Solitaire-Speed-Hand & Foot game. It is a partner game in the Nertz variant and a solo game as Grouch, where you try to get rid of your hand as fast as possible, while everyone counts up from aces in the middle of the table, and goes solitaire style through the deck. It is a fast paced, fairly luck based game, but fun for all the chaos.
At seventh I will place Skip-Bo, this game is very flexible being playable with singles, partners or larger teams. Each player/team is trying to get rid of their pile while drawing until they have 5 cards in their hand at the start of their turn. They must count up from 1 to 12 in the middle to play cards, with the titular Skip-Bo cards serving as the wild card and being playable on any number as the next number up. It is very lucky so we play in teams usually to incorporate a little more strategy. I love this as a family game, but would not play it with friends, because of its simplicity.
For eighth place I will pool together 4 Card and 6 Card Golf. They are simply too luck based and don’t require any strategy aside from understanding the rules. At second to last place I have Uno Flip. In my opinion, my family enjoys the game all too much, and it’s lost its pizazz for me. I have come to see it as a time killer of sorts. Finally, in tenth is Texas Hold ‘Em. I have little experience with it but I found it intriguing. Of course I don’t condone gambling though.
